About YHTP: Our Mission and History

Who we are:

Founded in 1993 by former First Lady of Tennessee Andrea Conte, You Have the Power began bringing together those touched by violent crime.  YHTP focuses on education, prevention, and policy through the lens of survivors.  It produces documentaries and resource guides on contemporary issues on crime prevention, such as child sexual abuse and human trafficking; presents community safety training sessions for caregivers, educators, and the public. They developed and implemented a victim impact curriculum for adults in prison and another for at-risk youth delivered through community groups.

Our Mission:

To empower victims of crime through education, advocacy, and understanding.

What we do:

We produce documentaries and resource guide books and present community safety trainings on important concerns such as:

  • Child Sexual Abuse
  • Domestic Violence and Healthy Relationships
  • Sexual Assault
  • Elder Abuse
  • Sex Trafficking
  • Technology Safety

We collaborate with communities across Tennessee to:

  • Present public programs on focus area topics
  • Provide education and training for day care workers, educators, parents, and others on the prevention of and recognition of child abuse.

We advocate for victims of crime and their families in order to:

  • Serve as a clearinghouse for information and as a resource to other agencies as requested.

We educate:

  • Offenders/parolees on the impact of their actions with the only victim impact curriculum approved by TDOC
  • Middle school and High school age youth on accountability, empathy, and planning for the future with our youth impact curriculum
  • Businesses on the impact of domestic violence and how to support employees through policies and procedures addressing domestic violence with our domestic violence in the workplace curriculum

Sources of Funding:

We meet our financial needs through a variety of sources.

  • Community trainings
  • Government and community grants
  • Annual campaign and donations
  • Three signature events – Powerhouse Award Luncheon, “Voices from the Garden” memorial service for young homicide victims, and Powerfully Thankful Event & Auction
