What We Do

You Have the Power is a nonprofit that empowers those victimized by crime through education, advocacy, and understanding. We provide crime victims with information on what to do and where to go next, and how they can work with investigators and authorities to get the best possible outcome.

Also, we educate the public to keep them from becoming victims in the first place. Our free resource guides and community presentations explain how crime happens, how to prevent it, and what to do if it affects you or the people you know.

But crime prevention doesn’t stop with current and potential victims. Our Victim Impact Curriculum helps offenders and parolees understand the impact of what they did, why they did it in the first place, and make better choices in the future. This curriculum also inspired a Youth Impact Curriculum for at-risk youth to keep them from committing serious offenses later.

Production

Our full collection of resource guides is available for free download in the Resources section. They’re updated on a regular basis and some of them are available in Spanish (with other languages scheduled for translation).  Every year we provide thousands of hard copies of these free guides to hospitals, child advocacy centers, schools, colleges, churches, and community groups. Call us or e-mail us to pick some up from our office or have them delivered. (We can also mail these to you… read on for details.)

The resource guides are free if picked up from our office or delivered. We can also mail the guides to you, although we do charge a small fee (usually between $10-20) to cover shipping costs. The fee varies depending on how many guides you ask for and how far we have to send them. We always use the cheapest available postage rate to keep those costs low.

In addition to our resource guides, You Have the Power also offers original documentaries incorporating victim and law enforcement perspectives on topics like sexual assault, domestic violence, and sex trafficking. The full listing of available documentaries is available on YHTP’s Shopify website.

Many of our presentations are free, underwritten by grants or donations. However, some groups underwrite the presentations themselves. Please call or e-mail our office for more information. Pricing for documentaries is available on Shopify.

Collaboration and Advocacy

You Have the Power strives to partner with both local and national organizations in their work for crime victims in Tennessee and across the country. Some of those include:

  • National Coalition Against Domestic Violence
  • Nashville Coalition Against Domestic Violence
  • Season to Remember – Tennessee Board of Parole (BOP)
  • Tennessee Crime Victims Rights Week Committee
  • Center for Non-Profit Management
  • YWCA Engaging Men Coalition
  • Tennessee Reentry Collaborative (TREC)
  • Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce

Education and Training

Current presentations we offer include:

  • Bullying (adult and youth versions available)
  • Child sexual abuse
  • Domestic violence and healthy relationships
  • Elder abuse
  • Sex trafficking (adult and youth versions available)

A typical presentation includes a screening of a documentary on the issue, a PowerPoint discussion led by a guest facilitator, and a Q&A session. We welcome the inclusion of local group leaders (clergy, counselors, resident advisors, Title IX coordinators, etc.) who can provide the audience with additional perspectives and customized information.

Our presentations usually run 90 minutes, but we can scale them down to 30-60 minutes to meet the scheduling needs of your group.

Scheduling a presentation is as simple as sending an e-mail to info@yhtp.org or calling us at (615) 292-7027. We’ll talk with you about the kind of presentation you want and what dates you have available, and schedule a trained facilitator for the session.
